We had hot dogs on the new grill and four courts going for most of the day at Miller Park (2500 Queen St) in Winston-Salem yesterday.

2014 Panache at High Rock Lake

It was Ladies Day at the 2014 version of Terry and Sue Wien's Panache at High Rock Lake.  The ladies of Carolina Petanque played good, steady petanque all day long and ended up besting the men.  The top four qualifiers from our field of sixteen, eight men and eight women, were all women!

Sue Daniels partnered with Shirley Jones to beat the team of Anne Shoaf and Sue Wien in the finals.  Sue Daniels also won the 2013 Panache at the Wiens on High Rock Lake with me as her partner AND the 2013 Zanesfield (Ohio) Panache with her husband Danny.  And Shirley recently won the 2014 Zanesfield Panache with Abderrahim (Abdul) El Hadi as her partner.  It seems as though Shirley and Sue just have the right set of skills to make them really good at the panache (new partners every game) format!

After the tournament, Terry and Sue took us out onto High Rock Lake for an early evening cruise in their pontoon boat.  It was a cool, relaxing way to settle down from the long, hot day of petanque.  Thanks, Terry and Sue, for a wonderful event!

New grill!

Wednesday morning play at Miller Park (2500 Queen St in Winston-Salem).  We were happy to see that the Parks and Recreation guys got our long-awaited new grill installed.  Cookouts to come!

Nice crowd at Miller Park (2500 Queen St) in Winston-Salem on Sunday.  Fred brought a nice, young man out to play.  Wyatt, a grandson of Fred's friend Barry, played several games and played well.

We were very happy to have a couple of our newest members, Rusty and Marcia, make the trip down to W-S from Deep Gap, NC.  They're building their own terrain in Deep Gap, and promise to have some of us up to play soon.

Ed and Bertie drove up from Lexington for the first time in a while.  It was great to see them back on the courts.  Also, Barb rejoined the group for the first time in quite a while.  Hope she and Rom can make it more often.

Recent play

Here are a few shots of recent club play.  The first ones are from last Wednesday morning at Miller Park in Winston-Salem.  The mid-week sessions have been reasonably well attended.  Those who are not burdened with working weekday morns have been enjoying the coolness compared to afternoon play now that summer has arrived.  Bob treated us to pizza after play; then, we stopped by his place and spent a little time staking out the area he's planning to convert to a new terrain.

Then, on Friday evening, Nelson and Rebekah came down to our place in Lexington and played a few games.  They brought supper along with them (grilled chicken, pasta salad, and peach cobbler with ice cream!) so we played, dined, and played some more.
