We had 24 teams of two turn out for the 2021 Mid-America Mixed Doubles held at Catawba River Soccer (and petanque!) Complex in Morganton, NC.

As well as the Carolinas, we had players from Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Ohio.

The format was three qualifying rounds using the "Swiss Hotel" system of scoring. The top 12 finishers were seeded into the Concours (Championship) brackets and the bottom 12 teams into the Consolante (Consolation) brackets.

Prizes were awarded for the top four teams overall (Concours) and the top three teams in the Consolante.

The winning team flew in from Florida and took home the GOLD medals as well as a monetary reward. Erika Nielsen (14 trs old!) and her dad, Raymond, played beautifully throughout the day putting point after point within inches of the target (jack/cochonnet). We were extremely happy to have them attend.

John and Mary Jo Wilson from Greensboro finished second and won the SILVER medals plus cash prize. Though Mary Jo professes not to consider herself a tournament player, she certainly played like one on Saturday and was supported by John's shooting and pointing.

Some considered the team that finished third, winning the BRONZE, Juan Hernandez (Hickory) and Tracie Jeffries (Valdese) as possibilities to be in the finals at the end of the day, but they were upset by the steady play of John/Mary Jo in the semi-finals.

Pictured above are all those who finished in the top four of either Concours or Consolante brackets. Congratulations to all of them and to the entire field of teams. There was plenty of good play all around.

Thanks to all who contributed to making the day a success. Kirk did a great job as Tournament Director and Mike House as Sec/Treasurer. Shirley deserves special mention for assisting so many people with finding partners, accomodations, registrations, etc.

Jeff, Max, and others helped with terrain prep work and hospitality.

Thanks also to Bill Cooke, Larry Creasy, and Allen Cassady for assisting with umpire duties.
