Travels with Shirley

From top to bottom:

Shirley and about a dozen more are continuing to support indoor petanque (soft boules) at the Kernersville Recreation and Event Center on Tuesdays at 1:30.

One of her new players, Carol, had this for her pickleball racquet cover, but Shirley didn't get her info. Yet!!!

The games finished a little early so she made a stop at Arbor Ridge Independent Living Community to attempt to drum up interest for soft boule players. We'll see if it pays off.

Another view of the Arbor Ridge facility.

Yesterday 9/21/2025 Chris played for a while!

Eva, Chris, and Rob

We were thrilled to have Chris Paccione play for a while yesterday at Miller Park after his very recent heart surgery. We just don't want him to overdo and rush his recovery.

Welcome back, Chris!

9/20/25 Big news at Nevin Park

Mica and Stephane continue to be enthusiastic hosts at Nevin Park in Charlotte.

The exciting new development is that they (along with Shirley) met with Katie Lloyd, Capital Planning for Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation, to discuss the possibility of expanding and renovating our playing area.

It appears that if we incorporate the area taken up by the grassy medians that separate each of the five old bocce courts that we've been playing on for the past fifteen years, we could have room for eight courts. We could have an area 16meters long by 34meters wide which would allow for regulation size courts with 1/2 meters on both ends and both sides before the retaining timbers.

Eight is the magic number of courts we would need to hold FPUSA tournaments!

Of course, it's not a "done deal," but Katie sounded promising.

Just for fun, I looked up the first play there.

Sleet!!!

It was about 34 degrees at game time in Charlotte yesterday with a wintry mix in the forecast when six of us got together for petanque at Nevin Park. We were very happy to have two new, first-time players with us. Dr. Ed Shoaf and his wife, Ann, had been communicating via e-mail for some time (he's the one who actually discovered the boules area at Nevin Park and informed CarolinaPetanque). Their schedule finally coincided with ours for Saturday. It's too bad the weather couldn't have been a little more cooperative for their first outing.

Nevertheless, we had fun trying to get a game in before the precipitation started. We only made it about halfway through the first game before the rain/sleet/snow began. The Shoafs were good sports and we finished in the wetness. Please come back again soon, guys, when we can hope for better weather.

The four CarolinaPetanque members who showed up (Augustin, Steve G., Shirley, and myself) continued through the ensuing showers for the next hour or so until the wintry mix finally subsided. We then played on until near-dark at 5:00 PM. We had good games and no one seemed to let the inclement circumstances deter their fun. Maybe it's just a mind set? Or maybe we're "mental"?

Greensboro

John Wilson sent me a couple of pics when the tree fell on the Tanger Gardens courts a week or so ago, and I just ran across them again and though some of you might be interested. I believe the Parks & Rec people had it cleaned up and playable in one day!

Now if we could just get Morganton going again.
