Five days in September

Shirley and I began a five day stretch of petanque play by driving 35 miles from Lexington to Tanger Gardens in Greensboro on Wednesday, September 6, for morning play.

After Wednesday morning Greensboro play, we traveled the 120 miles to Lincolnton, NC, where we spent the night at our Lincolnton home, the old home-place of Shirley's parents. There we were joined by our friend Mike Owens who had made the trip up from his home in Louisiana to spend a few weeks here in North Carolina. Then on Thursday morning the three of us made the 40 mile trip west to play at the Catawba River Soccer (and petanque!) Complex in Morganton.

After Thursday morning Morganton play, we made the 40 mile return trip to Lincolnton where we spent Thursday night. The next day, Friday, we hosted Max and Ben from the Morganton group for play on our own court in Lincolnton.

The next day, Saturday, we drove from Lincolnton over to Charlotte, a 40 mile trip, to play at Nevin Park. The usual 3rd Saturday event had been rescheduled for 2nd Saturday of September due to the 2023 Carolina Open tournament being set for the 16th and 17th of the month.

We were thrilled to have Anna Carter, and her companion, Lawton, join us. Anna had been a regular player in Charlotte in the past, but we had not seen her in a couple of years. Lawton is new to the game, but his athletic ability became evident quickly as he had no trouble competing in our group as the day went on.

Upon leaving Charlotte on Saturday afternoon, we made the 60 mile drive back to Lexington to spend Saturday night at home. Then on Sunday we drove the 25 miles to Winston-Salem for Sunday afternoon play. Sunday saw the biggest crowd of players, around 20, that we have had in quite a while in W-S. Al and Heidi of the Athens, GA, Classic City Petanque Club, were there . And Alice from the Greensboro group joined us as well.
