Hiow we spent our weekend

Friday
Bill Cooke

We made the trip up to Asheville to play at the new terrains at Michel's soon-to-be new restaurant, Rendezvous. They're going to have eight courts and hope to be open by late summer for French food at its finest. Michel envisions a place where people can not  only enjoy French cuisine inside, but can also choose to purchase a prepared picnic for outside at petanque. There will also be a bar for people who just want to hang out and relax.

 Saturday

New shade structures are Work-in-Process

Then, on Saturday, after visiting on Friday night in Crossnore with Danny and Sue, we came back down the mountains a ways to play in Morganton. Unfortunately, we picked a day when none of the "regular crowd" was avaialable. Steve, Jane, John, Jeff, Tracie, David, Ed, Kirk, Bo, Parker, Marc, Kathy, Juan, Susanne, etc, ALL had other commitments. What are the chances? Oh, well, Bill drove down from Asheville, do it was just the five (Bill, Danny, Sue, Shirley, and myself) of us for play. Still had a lot of fun though!

Sunday

James brought a petanque cookie-cake!

Nathan and Katie

Nathan, Lamar, and Sarah

We finished up the weekend back at Miller Park in Winston-Salem, and, this time, we had plenty of players. We didn't know what to expect, crowd-wise, since it was Mother's Day, but there was a large turnout. We were particularly happy to see Kirk and Bo there since they don't make it all the way down to W-S very often.

Also, we had a walk-up group of Sally and her extended family join us for the first time. Sally, Katie, Drew, Sarah, Lamar, Gigi, Nathan, and LJ seemed to have a great time, and we hope they'll be back soon.

Senior Games

The Gang
With Chuck Vestal, Senior Games Director

Second Place in the Team Finals
Winners in the Team Finals
This year, for the first time, Carolina Petanque chose to push for inclusion of petanque in the Piedmont Plus Senior Games. With the consent and assistance of Senior Games Director Chuck Vestal, we were able to make it happen.

We had a really fun tournament in perfect early-summer Carolina weather. There were 25 players participating along with Chuck and Diana as organizers from the Parks Department. I was the tournament director and umpire.

We played triples wherever possible with some deviations in the first round of play due to the odd number of players. After the first round, using the panache format where players have different partners at random in each round, two more rounds were played. One of our first-time players exited the competition after round one so that 24 players played in rounds two and three-- triples on four courts.

After three rounds of play, Chuck and Diana awarded Senior Games medals by age and gender to the top performers in each bracket.

To conclude the event, we had six of the top qualifiers play one final game to determine the overall team winners. Congratulations to John Wilson, Carol Cearley, and Shirley Jones who played a great game in defeating John Sangimino, Tom Cearley, and Fred Marchant for the 2018 team title.
