AIBC (Amelia Island Boules Club) hosted the 2023 version of SE Regional Mixed Doubles on Sunday, March 12, 2023.
There were 32 teams participating, five of which were Carolina Petanque.
Competing from Carolina were: Hank Maudlin/Jane Cameron, Preston Meyers/Tess Whitlock, Tracie Jeffries/Michel Baudouin, Marc Quilici/Kathy Cline, and Juan Hernandez/Shirley Jones.
The play consisted of three morning qualifying rounds (Swiss Hotel ranking) followed by single elimination play after lunch.
Here is where the teams ranked after qualifying rounds:
The best qualifying ranking for a Carolina team was a #2 (of 32 teams) finish by Marc & Kathy who were undefeated in the three rounds. Carolina placed four teams in the Concours (Championship) bracket.
As luck would have it, Marc & Kathy had to play another strong Carolina team, Tracie & Michel, in the Round of Sixteen. Tracie & Michel emerged and went on to the Quarter-finals.
Once again, Tracie & Michel came out on top versus the AIBC (Florida) team of John & Penny Bonvouloir who had been ranked #7 after qualifying with a record of 2W-1L.
Tracie & Michel moved on to the Semi-finals where they encounteredthe team of Gary Montgomery & Tina Lumas (both from Atlanta Petanque League).
After losing to Gary & Tina, they played against Jerry Miller (Seaside, Florida) & Michelle Healy (San Antonio, Texas) and won the game and with it the BRONZE medal!
Here are the teams that won medals:
GOLD- Raymond and Erika Nielsen (OhLaLa, Sanford, FL)
SILVER- Gary Montgomery and Argentina Lumas (APL, Atlanta, GA)BRONZE- Michel Baudouin and Tracie Jeffries (Carolina Petanque)
